How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on NiftyNotch starts with one question: will this product work for the person who is shopping for it? For our heat press guides, that means your project, your workspace and the transfers you plan to press.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the project and the workspace

The project decides the press. A flat shirt press is a different tool from a mug, tumbler or hat press.

We check the plate size the maker lists, the press type and the footprint, so you know what fits on your table. When your space limits the choice, we say what to measure.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at plate size, press type (clamshell, swing-away or auto), heat control, the display and timer, and pressure adjustment. We also note which transfer types the maker says the press suits.

Heat presses get very hot, so we note the safety features makers list, like heat-resistant handles, auto shut-off and a stable base. Cricut, HTVRONT and other makers describe their presses in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read through what buyers report after using a press. We look for patterns, like uneven heat, pressure that won't hold, loose handles, slow heat-up or apps that won't connect.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one home may score lower in a guide written for another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Cricut and HTVRONT each sell several presses with similar names, so we check each model name and code, and we only link new units.

When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every press we cover.

Our guides don't replace the maker's manual. For heat, time, pressure and safe handling, follow the maker's directions, and keep hands, cords and anything that burns clear of the hot plate.

We don't promise that any press will give perfect transfers, and we make no promises about burns or safety. When a maker makes a claim, we label it as the maker's claim.
